Does God Give Second Chances?
Everyone needs a second chance sometimes. At times, you might need the opportunity to make a complete 180-degree turn, totally starting over. Most of the time, though, you only need a slight course correction. Second chances allow you to shift, to adjust behavior, to get back on track.
Does God give second chances? The Bible tells story after story of people who needed second chances, both small and large. Consider the story of Jonah in the Old Testament:
God instructed Jonah to go to the people of Nineveh, who were not living honorably. Jonah’s job was to warn them that unless they changed their behavior, they would face punishment from God. However, in Jonah’s fear, he disobeyed God and fled. God encountered Jonah again, and over three days, Jonah recognized that he had gone off-course.
God offered Jonah a second chance. Jonah obeyed, going to the Ninevites to give them God’s warning. And then, to Jonah’s surprise, even the people of Nineveh recognized their wrongs. They repented, mourning their disobedience and seeking God’s grace.
God offered the Ninevites a second chance. He changed His plan; He did not allow the punishment that was to come (Jonah 3:10).
God is merciful and compassionate. He’s eager to give second chances, eager to offer grace upon grace. His desire is not for condemnation—His desire is rescue.
You may not have directly fled from God, like Jonah, and you may not have received a warning like the Ninevates, but you’ve likely sought a second chance before. The good news of the Gospel is this: Rescue is possible with Jesus.
John 3:16-17 says: “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
By His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, Jesus made life possible—forever—for all those who believe in Him. He wants new life for you. Accept the second chance offered to you in Jesus, and you will find life in His name.
PRAY
God,
Thank you for offering second chances. By Your grace, I can have life again. Help me to trust You more, to obey You quickly, and to offer Your grace to those around me. May my life tell the story of the second chances you’ve offered me.
Amen.
