The Power of Sharing a Meal
When people gather together to share a meal, something powerful happens. Relationships are transformed through the experience around a table.
Think about the relationships you love today. Can you remember when you first met? Do you remember meals shared at the very beginning of your friendship that developed your connection further?
The Bible demonstrates that the miracle of connection happens best through meals around tables. Jesus shared meals with people regularly, and in doing so, he created a loving, inclusive community. All were welcome around his table. Meals with Jesus were unhurried, joyful spaces.
Luke 10:38-42 tells the story of two sisters, Mary and Martha, who hosted Jesus for dinner. Because Martha was distracted by perfecting the meal and preparing her space, she took her attention off of Jesus. Mary, on the other hand, sat in his presence and pursued a relationship with him. While the food and drink were important, what truly mattered was the company. Sharing a meal is the avenue to trust and intimacy with your guest. Today, we would be remiss to overlook the people at our tables.
Who can you invite over for a meal this month? Is there a person in your life who needs connection, or a relationship that needs development? Follow Jesus’ example by bringing those people into your home, and sitting in conversation together.
