Waiting for God to Move

We are always chasing after good in our lives. But what if a good God is chasing us? Psalms 23:6 reminds us of God's goodness, "Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever."

If you're honest, sometimes it's easy to question whether God will ever move or how long his goodness will take to arrive. Sometimes, it's easy to ask God to run faster. What do we do in the waiting?

Abram and Sarai experienced this while waiting for God's promise. Genesis 12 begins their story with God promising Abram and his wife a great nation. He leads them to leave their home and to move into an uncertain future where they would be blessed and be a blessing for others. Abram was 75 years old when he left his home to begin this journey.

Throughout Genesis 13-20, Abram faced challenges in waiting. A great promise of reward and protection was waiting for him. But his impatience and insecurity about God's promise led him to find good without God. In preparation for the good that was about to come, God reminded Abram and Sarai of their identity in Him, changing their names to Abraham and Sarah.

It took 25 years for God to keep his promise. Abram was 100 years old, and Sarai was 90. Genesis 21:1-3 states, "The Lord kept his word and did exactly what he had promised for Sarah. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham when he was old. This happened at just the time God had said it would. And Abraham named their son Isaac.

It can be easy to become discouraged during the waiting, leading to distractions and a drift away from God's assurance and security. In the waiting, God invites us to be attentive and intentional to Him so that we do not lose sight of the fact that He is a promise keeper! He did it for Abraham and Sarah, and He will do it for you, too.

DIVE DEEPER

In the middle of your waiting, take time to read over Romans 8:28 to remind you of God's will in your life: "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purposes for them".
