What Really Happens When We Pray?

Have you ever wondered what difference your prayers make? Maybe you’ve wondered how to go about praying at all.

If that’s you, you’re not alone.

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches a crowd how to pray. He says, “This is how you should pray. ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored. May your kingdom come. May what you want to happen be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us. Keep us from sinning when we are tempted. Save us from the evil one’” (Matthew 6:9-13, NIRV).

He’s clarifying what prayer is and what it isn’t. When you pray to God, Jesus teaches, you’re declaring three things:

  1. That all people are united through God.

  2. That His way is best.

  3. That you want what He wants in your life.

Remember it through six words: Our Father. Your Way. Right Here.

Talking to God through prayer is important, and when we follow Jesus’ instructions for prayer, it’s simple. However, what’s simple is not always easy.

When you acknowledge God as the Father of all, you commit to unity. The words “Our Father” declare that the people of God are one body, one united group, coming to Him together.

When you elevate God’s way as the best one, you take steps in the direction of Jesus. The words “Your Way” recognize Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

When you call for God to have his way around you, you lay down your own preferences for his desire. The words “Right Here” humbly invite God to move right where you are.

God is big. He is stronger than the questions, concerns, and challenges in front of you. He can see things you can’t see.

And, God is close. He loves you and wants what’s best for you. You can trust him.
