Image-Bearing | Free to Imagine | Drew Moore
What does it mean to be made in God’s image? As we see in Genesis 1, image-bearing is our first identity. But when we fail to view ourselves and others through that lens, things can go very wrong. Thankfully, with Jesus, we can imagine a world where people are free by God’s spirit to represent Him and bring flourishing to everyone around them.
Key Verses
Mark 12:1-8 NLT: Then Jesus began teaching them with stories: “A man planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it, dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenant farmers and moved to another country. At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers grabbed the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty-handed.The owner then sent another servant, but they insulted him and beat him over the head. The next servant he sent was killed. Others he sent were either beaten or killeduntil there was only one left—his son whom he loved dearly. The owner finally sent him, thinking, ‘Surely they will respect my son.’“But the tenant farmers said to one another, ‘Here comes the heir to this estate. Let’s kill him and get the estate for ourselves!’So they grabbed him and murdered him and threw his body out of the vineyard.
Genesis 1:26-28 NLT: Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
Genesis 1:31 NLT: Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
Psalms 8:3-9 NLT: When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.O LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Genesis 1:27 NLT: So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
