A Prayer for Mothers

Jesus, today we lift to you every mother - those who gave life, and those who chose motherhood through adoption. We pray for the stepmothers, the aunts, the teachers, and the women who may not bear the name of mother but still choose every day to carry its weight with grace. For all who have a servant’s heart, who nurture, comfort, and guide, we give thanks. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

For the women who long to be mothers - we pray for blessings and hope over their hearts, and that you would sit with them in the waiting.

For the expectant mothers - we pray that joy would be radiant within them and on their faces. Jesus, let every kick, every flutter within their belly serve as a reminder of the pureness of your love.

For the mother who cradled her baby in her womb… but never in her arms – Jesus, we pray that you would outstretch your arms and cradle her now. Let her rest in the arms of Your peace.

For the new mothers with young children – we speak your grace and mercy over them in the beautiful chaos of their day. Your mercies are new every morning. Your steadfast love never ends.

For the mothers of the rebels and the runaways- we pray for a renewal of hope within their spirit as they continue to look at the horizon with open arms.

For the mothers who are far from their children today - we pray that your warmth and closeness be ever present, and that they would know they are not alone.

For the mothers who are trying to forget what could have been- help them to remember they are still your children. Let your unfailing love displace all guilt, all shame, and let their identities be found in you as your daughters.

For the orphaned or lonely – we pray for community, family, and belonging.

For those whose mothers are with you now Jesus - we pray for your peace and your comfort, as your word tells us, “As one whom their mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” (Isaiah 66:13)

And for grandmothers so full of wisdom - we pray that gifts of joyous memories and counsel be shared throughout generations.

God, we thank you for mothers, and we thank you for the gift of motherhood.

In the loving name of Jesus we pray,

Amen
