Generosity | Going Together | Drew Moore

Generosity is more than just a transaction, but an opportunity from God to invite transformation in your life and in the lives of those around you. With Jesus, generosity is relational, mutual, and spiritual. Paul experiences this as he writes a letter to the Philippians, reminding them, and us, of the power and impact of generosity. Who are your people that you will give and receive with, and how will you listen to God in your giving?

KEY VERSES

  • Matthew 28:19-20 NLT: Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

  • Philippians 4:10-20 NLT: How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me.Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty. As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this.Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once.I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness. At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God.And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.

  • Philippians 1:7 NLT: So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News.

  • Philippians 4:10 NLT: How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me.

  • 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 NLT: Now I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters, what God in his kindness has done through the churches in Macedonia. They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will. They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem. They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.

  • 2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT: You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

  • Philippians 4:14 NLT: Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.

  • Philippians 4:17 NLT: I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness.

  • Philippians 4:18-20 NLT: At the moment I have all I need—and more! Amen.
